South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has blown his left wing credentials with the announcement of a new energy future for the State.
Yesterday’s intervention into the electricity market by SA Labor showed the Government is only willing to go half way in meeting the challenges of post-climate change energy supply. Yes, they have announced that the biggest power storage system in the country will be built with the latest lithium battery technology. But sadly, this is coupled with a new carbon polluting, gas-fired power plant.
If Costa Rica, Iceland, Norway and the South Island of New Zealand can manage 100% renewable energy to light up their grids, what’s stopping South Australia from going all the way? Could it have anything to do with the cosy relationship the SA Government has with SANTOS, the big business gas supplier and fracker of the bedrock Australia-wide?
And to rub salt into the wound of those who got their hopes up, Weatherill has the gall to offer up the bountiful agricultural land of the Limestone Coast to his generous donors for fracking!!! Well, that’s fracking senseless and a betrayal of the people of the South East.
Jay Weatherill’s days as premier are numbered. Why doesn’t he go out with a bang and do something for South Australia that is truly ambitious and that would have South Australia leading the way into a sustainable future rather than licking the arses of the dirty polluting money grabbing bastards responsible for creating this mess in the first place?
